unit 6 / lesson 6
Advanced Unit 06: Technical Speech, Loanwords, Definitions, and Register Control
Learn how Common Kai handles technical writing: choose the right register, define terms, prefer transparent compounds when useful, mark loans when exact identity matters, and keep safety-critical language precise.
learner boundary
Common Kai first
Advanced work may compare technical, poetic, symbolic, and sacred choices. Start with exact Common Kai: the claim, condition, cause, request, or definition must be recoverable before register analysis.
- Write the literal Common Kai sentence first.
- Label technical, poetic, or sacred pressure separately.
- Do not make legal, medical, safety, or practical instructions poetic.
spaced review
grammar return practice
Start here before the new lesson work. These earlier patterns are deliberately returning in a later lesson.
Advanced Unit 03: Comparison, Quantifiers, Emphasis, and Scope
Mix this pattern with the current lesson's main form so retrieval happens in a new context.
- comparison inside embedded clauses
- comparison standard with te and na
- explicit rewrites for unclear English only also even all and not all
- focus and emphasis with sai soli tei rin-te and ai
- how-many questions with yave
- negation and focus scope
- number and group scope
- quality comparison with rali sharali saini and viri
- quantifier scope in relative clauses
- quantifiers with somen ralin shalin shan a-a nai and elin-ve
Advanced Unit 05: Translation Workshop from English into Common Kai
Before new material, explain the older pattern aloud and write one fresh Kai sentence with it.
- be as e or relation
- Common Kai layer before inner reading
- complexity reduction
- compound choice versus borrowing
- English that as va or sio
- have as te na or en
- idiom handling
- meaning before English grammar
- modal disambiguation
- question transformation
- register-safe translation
- relative clauses with va
- revision checklist
- safety medical and legal directness
- tense as aspect and time words
- translation workflow

Warning: Useraltelofor measuring or calculating function; usekomvuteroonly when discussing the foreign word "computer."
Objectives
- Distinguish
core, common, technical, loan, local, seed, poetic, sacred, anddeprecatedlabels. - Write clear technical definitions using stable Common Kai patterns.
- Decide when to use a native compound and when to use a loan.
- Apply basic v0.4 loanword adaptation rules.
- Preserve symbols when technical exactness requires them.
- Mark technical terms with domain, definition, source/root or loan status, examples, and register.
- Correct over-poetic or under-defined technical text.
- Keep safety, medical, legal, software, and scientific text direct.
- Name register problems without treating every non-Common line as wrong.
Core Idea
Technical Kai is not more mysterious than Common Kai.
It is more accountable.
A technical term should answer:
- What domain is this term for?
- What does it mean?
- Is it native, a loan, or a hybrid?
- Why is this form better than an ordinary phrase?
- What examples show its use?
- What register label should a learner see?
If those answers are missing, the term is not ready for a lesson.
Register Map
Use these labels consistently.
| Label | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|
core |
required for all learners | grammar particles, pronouns, high-frequency words |
common |
accepted general word | ordinary conversation and writing |
technical |
exact domain term | science, medicine, law, software, measurement |
loan |
borrowed or adapted foreign term | names, standards, brands, scientific labels |
local |
used by one group or setting | define on first use |
seed |
proposed but not stable | do not teach as standard |
poetic |
clear but artistic | poetry, story elevation, songs |
sacred |
ritual or vow form | chants, seals, invocations |
deprecated |
replaced or discouraged | legacy reading only |
The label is part of the meaning.
vaiton without a technical label is less useful than:
vaiton = Python programming language, technical loan.
Common, Technical, Poetic, and Sacred
Common Kai is the default for lessons, dictionary entries, examples, safety instructions, and shared correction.
Technical Kai is Common Kai plus domain precision.
Poetic Kai can be clear but marked as artistic.
Sacred Kai can be compact, symbolic, and intentionally ambiguous.
| Register | Good Use | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Common | Mi en noa. |
too vague for technical domains if no term is defined |
| Technical | Raltelo e alo li rale. |
unreadable if every term is unexplained |
| Poetic | Yaro e sha lumo. for unclear path |
unsafe if used as a legal or medical instruction |
| Sacred | quoted blessing or vow | can hide practical meaning |
Correction should name the register.
| Correction | Meaning |
|---|---|
Tio e Common Kai. |
This is Common Kai. |
Sio e sai sacred, ri sha lumo common. |
That is sacred, but not clear Common speech. |
Sio e rali poetic li common. |
That is more poetic than common. |
Ma ore sio shal lumo. |
Make that plainer / clearer. |
Technical Speech Principles
Technical writing should be precise before it is beautiful.
Use this order:
- Define the term.
- Mark the domain.
- Mark the register.
- Give root analysis or loan source.
- Give examples.
- Preserve symbols when exact symbols matter.
Do not make technical text sacred just because the topic is important.
Safety, medicine, law, software, and science need recoverable grammar.
Definition Pattern 1: Class and Function
The most useful definition pattern is:
term e class li function
| Kai | English |
|---|---|
Raltelo e alo li rale. |
A measuring device is a tool for measuring. |
Mirtelo e telo li mire. |
A camera is a device for seeing. |
Luntelo e telo li lune. |
A phone is a device for speech. |
Sannoa e noa li sane. |
A clinic is a place for healing. |
Santelo e telo li sane. |
A medical device is a device for healing. |
This pattern is useful because it tells learners what the thing is and what it is for.
Definition Pattern 2: Domain and Use
For specialized words, add a domain note in English or in a teaching table.
| Term | Domain | Register | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|
rale |
measurement | technical | measure or count precisely |
ralo |
measurement | technical | unit or measure |
ralu |
mathematics / software | technical | hidden variable |
ralai |
science | technical | law or pattern beyond cases |
rallune |
technical speech | technical | explain precisely |
ralmire |
science | technical | observe scientifically |
Use domain notes freely in teaching material.
The point is not to pretend every definition must be one Kai sentence.
The point is to make meaning recoverable.
Human Law and Scientific Law
v0.4 distinguishes human law/agreement from scientific law/pattern.
| Form | Register | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
lano |
core/common | law, written agreement, rule |
ralai |
technical | scientific law or pattern beyond cases |
Use lano when people, agreements, or institutions require something.
Lano li mi yare.
I must go. / A rule requires me to go.
Use ralai when discussing a scientific pattern.
Karaviti e ralai technical.
Gravity is a technical law/pattern.
In polished technical writing, define the domain more fully before using ralai.
Native Compound or Loan?
Kai prefers native compounds when the meaning is transparent.
| English | Prefer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| phone | luntelo |
speech-device is transparent |
| camera | mirtelo |
seeing-device is transparent |
| clinic | sannoa |
healing-place is transparent |
| measuring device / calculator | raltelo |
measuring device is transparent |
| medical device | santelo |
healing-device is transparent |
Borrow when exact identity matters.
| English | Loan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Maria | maria |
personal name |
| Tokyo | tokio |
place name |
| Mars | marso |
planet/place name |
| Python | vaiton |
programming language name |
| gravity | karaviti |
technical scientific term |
| computer as foreign word | komvutero |
borrowed term, not preferred for function |
Use komvutero only when discussing the foreign word "computer".
If the function is calculation, prefer raltelo.
If the function is seeing or display, define the device by function.
Borrow Only When Needed
Borrow when the word is:
- a personal name.
- a place name.
- a brand or product name.
- a programming language.
- a scientific standard.
- a unit or symbol.
- a culturally specific object with no useful Kai compound.
Do not borrow just because English has a familiar word.
Weak:
komvutero for every computer-like object.
Better:
raltelo when the device measures or calculates.
telo when a general device is enough.
mirtelo when the device is used for seeing or imaging.
Loan Sound Adaptation
Adapt foreign sounds into Kai phonology.
| Source Sound | Kai Adaptation |
|---|---|
| b | v |
| d | t or r |
| g | k |
| p | v or k |
| f | h or v |
| j | y or sh |
| z | s |
| ch | sh or t |
| x | ks in technical notation, otherwise s or k |
Break heavy clusters with a vowel, usually a or e.
If a loan ends in a non-Kai final consonant, add o for a visible form or a for a source-name.
Canonical Loan Examples
| Source | Common Kai | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maria | maria |
loan | personal name |
| David | tavit |
loan | personal name |
| Sofia | sohia |
loan | personal name |
| Alex | aleso |
loan | personal name |
| Monterrey | monterei |
loan | place name |
| Tokyo | tokio |
loan | place name |
| Mars | marso |
loan | planet/place name |
| Python | vaiton |
technical | programming language |
| gravity | karaviti |
technical | scientific loan |
| computer | komvutero |
loan | use only for the foreign word |
The older forms Paiton and graviti are superseded in v0.4 because p and g are not Common Kai consonants.
Required Loan Entry Fields
Every loan entry should include:
- source language or source identity.
- Kai-adapted form.
- status:
loan, technical, ortechnical loan. - pronunciation and IPA.
- Lumin LA-1 encoding.
- example sentences.
A loan without examples is not ready for broad teaching.
Required Technical Term Fields
Every technical term should include:
- term.
- domain.
- definition.
- source or root analysis.
- examples.
- whether it is native, loan, or hybrid.
- whether symbols should be preserved.
Example teaching entry:
| Field | Entry |
|---|---|
| term | raltelo |
| domain | measurement / tools |
| register | technical |
| definition | measuring or calculating device |
| root analysis | ral measure + telo device |
| type | native compound |
| example | Raltelo e alo li rale. |
This is more useful than just writing:
raltelo = measuring device
Symbols in Technical Text
Keep international symbols where exact reference matters.
| Symbol | Recommendation |
|---|---|
DNA |
keep as written in technical text until a spoken form is defined |
kg |
keep the symbol in measurement contexts |
m |
keep the symbol in measurement contexts |
s |
keep the symbol in measurement contexts |
Do not force a Kai translation if the symbol is the standard.
You can add a spoken Kai explanation after the symbol if needed.
Technical Sentences
Use ordinary Common Kai grammar with technical words.
| Kai | English |
|---|---|
Ma rallune. |
Please explain precisely. |
Mi el rale teno al raltelo. |
I am measuring the object with a measuring device. |
Mi or ralmire yaro. |
I observed the road scientifically. |
Raltelo e alo li rale. |
A measuring device is a tool for measurement. |
Mirtelo te mi. |
I have a camera. |
Ma sanmire mi. |
Please examine me medically. |
Technical vocabulary does not change basic word order.
Software Terms
Software vocabulary is technical and should be defined before broad use.
| Term | Domain | Register | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
vaiton |
software | technical loan | Python programming language |
kirkaa |
software | technical | source of code |
kirkae |
software | technical | act with code |
kirkao |
software | technical | code form |
kirlao |
software | technical | function form |
kirmao |
software | technical | variable form |
In a beginner lesson, do not use these without definition.
In a technical lesson, give a table and examples.
Medical and Safety Register
Medical and safety text must be direct.
| English | Common / Technical Kai |
|---|---|
| Do not drink the water. | Ma sha hune huno. |
| I need medicine. | Mi el nive sano. |
| The clinic is safe. | Sannoa e niva. |
| Please examine me medically. | Ma sanmire mi. |
| The medical device is at the clinic. | Santelo en sannoa. |
Do not replace instructions with blessings or poetic images.
A blessing may follow the instruction, but it cannot replace it.
Legal and Rule Register
Use lano for law, written agreement, or human rule.
| Kai | English |
|---|---|
Lano or kale. |
The agreement is written. |
Lano li mi yare. |
I must go. / The rule requires me to go. |
Lano li ti sha hune huno. |
You must not drink water. |
Do not use Sacred Kai to hide the terms of an agreement.
Legal text needs stable Common or Technical Kai.
Register Correction
Register correction names the problem.
| Problem | Better Correction |
|---|---|
| Sacred wording in a safety instruction | Sio e sai sacred, ri sha lumo common. |
| poetic wording in a technical definition | Sio e rali poetic li common. |
| undefined technical term | Technical Kai needs a definition. |
| unclear Common Kai | Ma ore sio shal lumo. |
| seed word in a lesson | Sio e seed. Ma vae yelo rinum. |
Use English labels when teaching if that is clearer.
The goal is shared precision, not punishment.
Seed Words and Governance
A seed word is proposed, not stable.
Do not teach a seed word as standard until it has:
- recoverable root analysis or marked loan status.
- at least three natural Common Kai examples.
- a clear grammar role.
- a register label.
- no conflict with an existing common word unless it adds precision.
For grammar rules, the bar is higher:
- solve a repeated translation problem.
- do not break existing core sentences.
- explain in one short learner rule.
- show enough examples and negative examples.
Definition Quality
A good definition:
- names the class.
- names the function or domain.
- avoids circular wording.
- gives at least one example.
- marks the register.
- warns about nearby confusing terms when needed.
Weak:
raltelo = raltelo
Better:
Raltelo e alo li rale.
A measuring device is a tool for measuring.
Best for a dictionary:
raltelo: measuring device; technical; root ral measure + telo device; example Mi el rale teno al raltelo.
Register-Control Workflow
Use this workflow before publishing a technical sentence.
- Identify the domain.
- Decide Common, Technical, loan, local, poetic, or sacred.
- Define every technical or local term.
- Prefer transparent compounds unless exact identity matters.
- Mark loans visibly.
- Preserve symbols where standards require them.
- Rewrite over-poetic safety or technical text into Common Kai.
- Add examples.
Mini-Reading: Defining a Device
Read the short teaching note.
| Kai / Teaching Text | English |
|---|---|
Raltelo e alo li rale. |
A measuring device is a tool for measuring. |
Raltelo e technical. |
It is technical. |
Mi el rale teno al raltelo. |
I am measuring the object with a measuring device. |
Komvutero e loan. |
komvutero is a loan. |
An va telo el rale, ma lune raltelo. |
If the device measures, say raltelo. |
The note teaches a word, its register, and when to avoid a loan.
Watch Out
| Risk | Better Advanced Kai |
|---|---|
| Borrowing every English technical word | Use native compounds when function is transparent. |
| Using technical terms without definitions | Define the term and give examples. |
| Treating loans as ordinary common words | Mark loan or technical. |
| Using older superseded forms | Use v0.4 forms such as vaiton and karaviti. |
Confusing lano and ralai |
Use lano for human law, ralai for scientific law/pattern. |
| Making medical or safety text poetic | Use direct Common or Technical Kai. |
| Teaching seed words as stable | Mark seed words and keep them out of core lessons. |
| Omitting symbol standards | Keep DNA, kg, m, and s when exactness matters. |

E. Status and Domain Fields
For each term, give a domain and register.
ralteloralmiresartelovaitonsanmireluntelotokioralai
F. Register Repair
Repair or label the issue.
- A safety instruction is written only as a sacred blessing.
- A technical definition uses symbolic poetry and no class or function.
- A lesson teaches a
seedword ascore. - A term entry says only
raltelo = raltelo. - A learner uses
Sio e shanelto correct a poetic register issue. - A text uses
komvuterowhen it means a measuring/calculating device. - A legal agreement is written only as a chant.
G. Technical Translation
Translate into Common or Technical Kai.
- Please explain precisely.
- I am measuring the object with a measuring device.
- The medical device is at the clinic.
- The clinic is safe.
- The agreement is written.
- I must not drink water.
- The camera is with me.
- The phone is with Aleso.
- Python is a technical loan.
- Gravity is a technical loan.
- This is Common Kai.
- That is more poetic than common.
H. Term Entry Building
Build a short term entry for mirtelo. Include:
- term.
- domain.
- register.
- definition.
- root analysis.
- type: native compound or loan.
- one Kai example.
I. Loan Entry Building
Build a short loan entry for vaiton. Include:
- source identity.
- Kai-adapted form.
- status.
- domain.
- why it is borrowed.
- one teaching example or definition note.
J. Register-Control Rewrite
Rewrite each as clear Common or Technical Kai.
- Over-poetic: "May the hidden gate of thirst refuse the water" for "Do not drink the water."
- Undefined: "Use the thing-machine" when the function is measuring.
- Wrong register: "This sacred line is Common Kai."
- Wrong law word: using
lanofor a scientific law/pattern. - Wrong loan: using
paitonfor Python. - Missing definition:
raluappears in a beginner lesson with no explanation.
K. Guided Terminology Project
- Create a six-line technical note for a new or existing term. Use an existing term if you do not want to propose a new one. Include:
- term and register.
- domain.
